Cheektowaga shooting suspect arraigned

Witness Describes Hectic Scene In Cheektowaga

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY — The man accused of opening fire inside a Dollar General store Cheektowaga Police was charged and arraigned Wednesday.

Police have identified the suspect as Travis Green, 29, of Gardenville Pkwy in Cheektowaga. He plead not guilty at his arraignment in Cheektowaga Town Court.

He is charged with attempted murder in the second-degree, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, assault and unlawful wearing of body armor.

The District Attorney's Office says that Green entered the store to request an employment application when he became irate and left the store. He then fired approximately 20 rounds with AR-15 rifle at the store from the parking lot.

Cheektowaga Police Chief David Zack says police have had contact with Green in the past, but they were minor and the last incident was in 2013.

Green was taken to jail without bail. He will return to Cheektowaga Town Court for a hearing on Nov. 20 at 9:30 a.m.

If convicted, Green could face a maximum of 25 years in state prison.

The shooting happened just around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Chief Zack says they received a 911 call of a man with a gun at the Dollar General. Because there are six Dollar General stores in Cheektowaga, there was some confusion at which location the shooting was occurring. Police were able to determine the location and arrived on scene within four minutes of the original call.

Witnesses told police the suspect fled the scene on foot and police were able to locate the suspect.  The suspect was wearing camouflage and was wearing body armor.

He did not have a weapon on him when he was taken in custody, but police did recover two AR-15 rifles from the scene. Chief Zack said Tuesday evening that there may have been more weapons in a vehicle the suspect was driving.  However, after investigating, it was determined that there were not additional weapons in the vehicle other than the ones originally recovered.

Police say a 53-year-old man from Cheektowaga was shot in the shoulder, but the victim's name has not been released at this time. Chief Zack says this was an unprovoked attack and do not know the motive of the shooting.

At this time, police say this incident does not appear to be connected to terrorism, but the FBI is looking into Green's background.

Chief Zack also commended other witnesses who assisted police in stopping the shooting and apprehending the suspect.
