BUFFALO, NY - Buffalo Police have made an arrest in connection to the death of Ameer Al Shammari, 13, whose body was discovered Saturday afternoon at the abandoned and overgrown former Tee to Green golf facility on Amherst Street near Churchill Street.
Buffalo Police made the announcement early Tuesday morning that 13 year old boy has been arrested. Police are expected to release more details at a later time.
Speaking through an interpreter, Ameer's father told WGRZ-TV, "We don't want anyone to forget about this kid," before he began to weep while surrounded by other members of the Iraqui community outside the family home on Peter Street early Monday afternoon.
Ameer had been missing since Friday. He was last seen in the vicinity of Amherst and Peter streets around five o'clock Friday afternoon.
While police have not released information on how Ameer died, his death has been ruled a homicide.
Shammari's family is affiliated with the the Iraqi American Society of Buffalo. We talked to members on Saturday who told us the organization was notified when the body was found. They said their main priority now is to comfort the family, who has been living in Buffalo for about a year-and-a-half.
While speaking with 2 On Your Side, the boy's father also remarked on the bitter irony of a family which moved to escape violence in their native land, only to have it take the life of his youngest son.
