Amherst mother on trial for daughter's death

BUFFALO, NY-- The non-jury trial of an Amherst woman accused of killing her eight-year-old daughter began Monday with opening statements.

Candace Cartagena pleaded not guilty to second degree murder charges in the death of her daughter Bianca.

Bianca Cartagena was found dead in her mother's home on Greengage Circle back in 2010.

Prosecutor Kristen St. Mary says Cartagena, "intentionally asphyxiated her daughter" and was fueled by anger and rage.

The prosecution's first witness was Kathleen Sweeney, Candace Cartagena's mother. Bianca was living with Sweeney just before her death.

Also expected to take the stand is Bianca's grandfather, Bryan Sweeney. He found Bianca's body in a bedroom at his daughter's home.
