Crews respond to Elmwood Ave. apt. fire

BUFFALO, NY---Crews responded to a high-rise apartment fire in Buffalo.

It started at 3:53 a.m. on Monday in a fourth floor apartment building near Elmwood and West Utica. Crews were able to contain the fire to the one apartment.

No visible flames could be seen, but there was heavy smoke coming from the building.

Two residents were taken to ECMC for a medical evaluation but are expected to be okay. Red Cross will be assisting the two.

Crews on scene said the damage estimate was around $750,000.

The cause of the fire was ruled as careless smoking. Crews are continuing to investigate the fire at this time.
