WGRZ in the Windy City

I love spontaneous vacations.. and my friends at Channel 2! The other day, my friend and coworker Thea texted me and said "$59 flights to Chicago in two weeks.. wanna go?" You bet I do! So Thea, Matt Pearl and I are off to the Windy City for three days of exploring. They've both been there before, but it will be my first time.. any recommendations for me? I'm just ready to try some pizza!

"So.. who's the oldest?"

My family is awesome. I will say that right up front. My parents are great, and my sisters and brother and I are best friends. Everyone always comments on how alike my sisters and I look. That's great, except for one thing: everyone always thinks they're my big sisters, when in reality, I'm the oldest!

Everyone says it's a height thing. I'm 24 and 5 feet tall, my sister Pam is 21 and 5'4", and Ang is 20 and 5'6". (My brother Ace is 15 and 6 feet tall.. whatever. My dad jokes with me that I was the rough draft and my brother was the final copy.)

I'm convinced there had to be some point when I looked older than my sisters.. you know, like when they were babies. So I dug up some old family photos to track this age-reversal. When do you think both my sisters passed me in the age-race?

Example 1: 1987. I am clearly older with far more teeth.

2: The three of us in 1989. I've still got them on the height.

#3: Christmas card, 1988. I still say I'm oldest here, maybe just because I have the biggest head.

#4: Easter 1989. The age race is beginning to tighten, but I think I still have an edge.

#5: 1990. The teeth thing again, except this time to my detriment: they both have the pearly baby teeth and I am in desperate need of braces.

#5: 1991. Obviously I am still older because I have that disgruntled teenage "why are you taking my picture" look while both of them are still smiling cutely.

#6: 1991. (You can thank my dad for the haircuts, by the way. Great doctor, lousy barber.)

#7: Fast forwarding to 1999.. mainly because the "awkward phase" we all went through is not something I'm willing to share on this blog. Besides, if I did, they'd both kill me. But I think those years had to be where they closed the gap, because from then on out, we all get mistaken for each other.

#8: Easter in Disney, 2004. It's close here, but we all at least look the same age, right?

#9: Pam (center)'s graduation from high school, 2004.

#10: 2005. The whole family. They have all passed me by then!

Finally, my graduation from Ithaca College, 2005. I think they both have me by this point.

Oh well.. it's a losing battle, I know. But it's still funny to look back! And besides.. I'm just looking 60 or 70 years down the line when I can point at them and say "ha, ha.. now it pays to look the youngest!"

Heard of the Herd?

It took me 24 years.. but I really like going to Bisons games now! My dad has been a loyal season ticketholder for as long as I've been alive, and so I am not exaggerating when I say I have probably gone to at least a hundred games. However, that was not the case for my dear coworkers Ly and Thea, so this past Wednesday's game against the Syracuse Skychiefs was their first experience with "The Herd!"

We had a great time. Perfect baseball weather.. sunny and just a little chilly. We partook in all the new food that's added this year.. B-shaped soft pretzels and fried bologna sandwiches, along with the classic nachos, peanuts and hot dogs. (Yes, we really did eat all that.. then went for Mexican.. then Dunkin Donuts.. then wanted to die from stomachaches. Go figure.)

At any rate, we all had a great time and are excited to go back again. Thanks for the tickets, Dad!

By the way, if you are wondering where to get my awesome "I <3 Buffalo Baseball" shirt.. go see my friend Mark at Poster Art. Two locations: a brand-new one by Fridays in the Boulevard Mall and 1055 Elmwood Ave. Tell him I sent you! :)

San Diego!

My friend Emily and I just spent five terrific days in San Diego, California! I had never been, but everybody told me it's the prettiest city they've ever seen. I wasn't disappointed!
Our friend Joey lives near Pacific Beach, so that was where we spent our first day. It was a little too cold to be beach weather, but it was still fun to walk along the water and explore the little shops and restaurants nearby, especially Garnet Street and Mission Boulevard.

The next day, we went to Sea World! It was so much fun. We saw sea lion and dolphin shows..
Then we walked through a shark tank! You actually walk through an enclosed area right in the middle of the tank and they swim right above you! So scary- but very cool.
We also took a skyride over Sea World and the marina.
Another day, we went to Balboa Park, which we DC-ers referred to as "the California version of the National Mall." It is a sprawling, gorgeous park filled with fountains, cliffs, museums, restaurants, and two of my favorite things: dogs and bocce ball games.

My favorite place was Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach. The view was incredible.
Emily left a day before I did, so I did spend a little alone time at Fashion Valley, one of the biggest malls in the country, and somehow found my way inside a Tiffany store..

..and magically wound up trying on the Legacy ring, which I have always wanted.. until I found out it was $34,000. So much for that!

East Coast West Coast Worldwide

California, here we come..
see you all in a week!

PS.. please cross your fingers for Bruiser. I did find a really nice place to board him, but I am still terrified to leave him.. plus, I really will just miss him to death. So come to think of it.. you better cross all your fingers.. toes.. arms.. legs.. anything and everything, really.

Hopefully I'll bring back some sunshine!

Boarding for Bruiser.. Advice, Please!

I feel like it's the first day of school for my son and I am a terrified parent. I have to board my Yorkie terror (no typo.. yes, I mean terror) Bruiser for a long weekend in April, and I am at a loss as to where to go.

Here's the thing. Bruiser is 2 years old and borderline bipolar when it comes to other people and animals. It's very hit or miss. When we're out walking and strangers reach out to pet him, it's 50/50 whether he will snarl and lunge or smother them with kisses. (That's resulted in several near-heart attacks for me, as you might imagine.) And he really, really doesn't like other dogs.. at least, at first. He was fine in puppy school, but has since been bitten by a large dog, which results in him being very skittish and agressive with other animals.

All that aside, he's still my little prince so I want to board him someplace where he will get a lot of attention and patience. I'll drive a hundred miles and pay a hundred dollars a day if it means he will be well taken care of. So who has any recommendations? So far, I have heard of Debbie's Doghouse & Pet Palace, Eagle Ridge Kennels, and Canine & Company. I plan on checking all of them out, but would like everyone's opinion and advice!

Comment here or send me an email.. evetrano@wgrz.gannett.com. Thanks in advance.. from Bruiser and myself!

Happy 25th!

This past Friday was so special. First was Mary Friona's engagement party (you can check out her blog for more deets on that) but later that night, my siblings, grandparents and I threw a 25th anniversary party for my parents.

Aren't they so cute??

The cake was designed by my cousin Tony Concialdi (of Panaro's Italian Cafe on Delaware, right by Allen.. amazing, amazing food.) It was a carrot cake, just like at their wedding.

Cutting into it..

The first bite! Thank goodness this time, no cake wound up on my mom's dress.

My dad's parents and my parents

My Uncle Rick & Aunt Marce (my dad's sister), my mom & dad, my Aunt Elaine & Uncle Joe (my dad's brother)
My grandparents.. aren't they adorable?

My sisters and I. People tell us all the time how alike we look. They're my best friends in the world!

My baby brother.. yes, I said baby. He may be a 6-foot-tall, 15-year-old high school sophomore but he is still a baby to me.

My godfather, Larry Regan

Three generations of Anthony Vetranos

My mom and her girls!
It was such a fun night.. everyone had a ball. I loved seeing my parents with all their friends and family. The next big event is a birthday party for my mom in May.. but shh.. I'm not giving up any details!
