I'm amazed by how many motorists in Western New York seem to ignore or simply don't understand the basic rules for crosswalks.
For those of you who do honor, obey and respect the laws that are on the books, I say thank you.
But for the rest of you scofflaws, I have some choice words for you.
Let's start off with the simple fact that no matter how much of a hurry you are in, there is NO excuse to drive through a crosswalk when someone is proceeding through or about to enter the designated walkway.
Hardly a day goes by when I don't have a nice leisurely stroll interrupted because of the ignorance of a passing motorist who blatantly ignores common crosswalk courtesy.
The rules are simple folks - if someone is walking through a crosswalk or is preparing to enter a crosswalk, you need to yield and let them proceed.
We all live very busy lives and everyone wants to get from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible. But the safety of pedestrians needs to remain in the forefront of every driver's mind.
Bottom line? Let's all be courteous, cautious and conscious of pedestrians when you are behind the wheel.
Crosswalks exist for a reason - please recognize and respect their importance.
