The Grande Parade of the Falling Leaves Festival in Salamanca took place Sunday despite the casino gaming revenue dispute between the state and Seneca Nation. That dispute has left the city with major budget problems.
After months of planning for the event, parade organizers were told two weeks ago that the city police could not provide coverage so the parade would have to be cancelled.
But upset residents, city leaders, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Seneca Nation all worked together on a plan to keep the events on the calendar.
The parade route on Main Street was shortened and more volunteers pitched in to help out so that the 33 year old tradition could be maintained. Following the parade there was also the festival held at the Jefferson Street Park.
