I-90 Accident in Dunkirk
PORTLAND, N.Y. - State Police say another victim of Monday's crash on Interstate 90 has died. Accident Investigator John McCusker identifies that victim as 36-year-old Hanh Nguyen.
Nguyen is the daughter of Hang Phan, of Cleveland, Ohio. Phan, 64, who died from her injuries at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA on Monday.
The accident happened around 4:15 p.m. on Labor Day on the Thruway in the Town of Portland, between Dunkirk and Westfield in Chautauqua County. The crash closed the westbound Thruway for hours.
Captain Mike Nigrelli says the driver, Hung Q. Tran, 37, of Cleveland, OH, drifted into the median.
"Once he did that, he over corrected and came back across both westbound lanes. Continuing on, he went down the north shoulder, down an embankment and struck a tree."
Police say neither woman were wearing their seatbelts. They also ruled out a few factors.
"We know now that environment was not a factor. Other traffic was not a factor. Alcohol and drugs was not a factor. Driver fatigue is possibly, and I say possibly a contributing factor."
Tran and two other adults first were taken to Westfield Memorial Hospital, before being airlifted to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pennsylvania. A spokesperson at Hamot says Tran is listed in fair condition, and 41-year old Nguyet Phan remains in critical condition.
A five-year-old boy and two-year-old girl were taken to Women and Childrens Hospital in Buffalo. An eight-year-old girl suffered minor bumps and bruises and was treated at the scene and released.
