BUFFALO, NY-- A Western New York native barely survived a devastating earthquake in the Philipines this week. Now his family here is asking friends and neighbors for help.
Dennis Thomann grew up in Amherst and lives in the Philippines with his wife and daughter on the island of Bohol. It's located right near the epicenter of the 7-point-2 magnitude earthquake that killed 158 people.
Thomann's home collapsed his daughter was trapped under the rubble. Luckily she survived but the family lost everything.
Dennis' brother Mike who still lives in Amherst, has set up a website to help collect donations for quake victims.
"My brother has been helping everybody there. As an American the money goes a long way. He's always been a generous person and so I know he'll help his wife's family that's over there and other friends and things like that. So whatever we do get, it's going to get spread around, " Thomann said.
