ATTICA, NY - When flames tore through, and destroyed a family's home in Attica on Monday, the occupants were showered with donations. The family is alive thanks to the quick action of Attica Correction Officer Ernie Emminger.

Emminger told Channel 2's Claudine Ewing that he saw a flicker as he passed a house on his way to work. He stopped and went inside to alert the family. "I never go through the village of Attica because there is enough traffic with about 500-600 officers between Attica and Wyoming Correctional facilities, so I usually go around, for some reason I went through and noticed the light,  the flicker and turned the truck around."

Brooke Howe and her boyfriend David Haynos were asleep. Officer Emminger and Brad Walters assisted the family to get out of the burning home.

Howe told 2 On Your Side that since the fire, they have lived in an apartment complex. However, she says because of so many people bringing donations, they were asked to vacate.

The family is in need of a place to live in the Attica School District. "These kids have gone through a lot, their world has been completely flipped upside down."

The Red Cross has provided gift cards to help the family buy necessities.

Attica employees collected money and items for the family.
