BUFFALO, NY - Buffalo Public Schools are among more than 50 schools and districts returning to class Thursday.

Buffalo schools return with a host of issues to deal with:

  • A still-unapproved plan to allow thousands of students to transfer out of failing schools, as required by law.
  • A new school added into the system now that the state has revoked the charter of Pinnacle Charter School. Students there start Monday.
  • Turning around low-performing schools like East and Lafayette high schools. The state approved a plan that keeps Johns Hopkins University as an educational partner for both and allows students to take BOCES programs.
  • Improving low attendance rates. The district says last year's of 91% was the highest since 2004, but didn't elaborate on what that number means or how it's calculated.
  • Dealing with new teacher evaluations, including some poor ones that just came in this week. The teacher's union plans to fight those evaluations.

Other big districts returning include Depew, Niagara Falls, East Aurora, West Seneca and Orchard Park.
