IRVING, NY - A man drowned in the waters of Lake Erie at Evangola State Park Saturday evening, New York State Park Police are reporting.

Brian J. McCluskey, 33, of Blasdell, and several family members waded into the water around 7:30 p.m. intending to swim to a boat anchored offshore. Family members called 911 when McCluskey went underwater and failed to resurface after several minutes.

They were joined in their search by members of various police agencies that responded to the call, and the U.S. Coast Guard. McCluskey was found in several feet of water and pulled to shore, where CPR was administered.

A statement released by State Park Police emphasized that the group had entered the water in an unguarded area.

McCluskey was taken to Lakeshore Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead by Chautauqua County Chief Coroner Warren Riles.
