Infected Mosquitoes Found in Chautauqua County

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, NY -- The New York Health Commissioner has declared that there's an imminent public health threat in Chautauqua County, after mosquito-borne diseases were detected in mosquito pools.

Health officials are advising people to get rid of any standing water around their property that may be in a bird bath or swimming pool cover. Mosquito need water to multiply. Also, make sure all windows and doors in your home have screens.

Recently, testing found the ' Eastern Equine Encephalitis ' virus in several mosquito pools in Chautauqua County. As of now, there have been no cases of people contracting the virus from a mosquito bite, but health officials say there's a significant risk there. Testing will continue while the local health department is reaching out to folks educating them about the issue.

Adults over 50 years old and children are most at risk of becoming severely ill from infection. Symptoms of West Nile virus or EEE include a high fever, stiff neck or feeling confused.

Mosquito are out and most likely to bite between dusk and dawn. It's advised to put on insect repellant before going outside.
