BUFFALO, NY-- The Buffalo Bills announced Monday, they've released kicker Rian Lindell.

Lindell had been on the team longer than anyone, but was let go in favor of 6th round draft pick, rookie Dustin Hopkins.

Lindell was going into his 11th season with the Bills, 14th in the NFL. He holds many franchise records and ranked second in all-time scoring for the Bills with 980 points, just 31 points behind Steve Christie. Out of his 24 field goal attempts last season Lindell made 21 of them, the longest being 50 yards.

Coach Doug Marrone spoke with the media just after 10 a.m.  Monday. He called Lindell a true professional.

"He worked extremely hard and was much better than I saw in the years past as far as the kickoffs and the long field goals," Marrone said of Lindell about his pre-season performance. "In the past 10 days, Dustin (Hopkins) has performed better.  So we made a decision to go with Dustin. It also gives Rian the ability- he's a great pro- it maybe gives him the ability to go ahead and get with another team. You make those decisions and you move on and a lot of times those decisions are tough."

So far this preseason, Hopkins has had four attempts in the first two preseason games and made all of them, but his longest was just 39 yards.

As for the other big competition on the team - quarterback EJ Manuel sat out at Monday's practice again after having what's being called a minor procedure done to his left knee.

Marrone told the media Monday that Manual was on campus, but needs to be off his feet for 48 hours. He said the procedure went great and Marrone will be meeting with the doctors Monday afternoon to find out if Manuel be back sooner than expected.
