TOWN OF CARLTON, NY - Sandra M. Flanagan, of Kent, NY, was driving her car down Oak Orchard River Road at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday when she failed to navigate a curve, crossed over the center line and went off the south side of the roadway, according to a statement released by the Orleans County Sheriff.
Her car jumped the guard rail and rolled about 100 feet down a "steep and heavily wooded" embankment that leads to Old Orchard River, deputies say. Her 2004 Ford Taurus came to a stop against a tree.
She was trapped inside the car for more than an hour before being freed by firefighters. She was taken up the embankment by rope rescue teams and flown to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight.
Sheriff's deputies say the accident remains under investigation but both alcohol and speeding appear to have been contributing factors. Charges are pending once Flanagan recovers from the crash.
