Employee Injured in Plant Explosion in Cattaraugus Co.

DELEVAN, NY - The New York State Police say one person suffered serious injuries in an explosion at the Gernatt Gravel Pit in Cattaraugus County.

A vice president at Gernatt Asphalt confirms to 2 On Your Side that an incident took place at its facility on Route 16 in Yorkshire shortly beofre 6 AM Friday morning.

A 2 On Your Side viewer says a blast around 6 a.m. shook her home. Another witness in the area says Mercy Flight was called to the scene.

The initial investigation reveals an employee at the plant, Thomas Treadway, 53, was in the process of shutting down the asphalt plant when an explosion took place in the conveyor belt. Treadway suffered serious burns and was flown to ECMC.

State Police say the plant also suffered significant damage.
