DARIEN, N.Y. - The sight of golf balls falling out of the sky is usually a cause for concern. This Friday, however, all those golf balls represent a lot of good.
Mercy Flights and Lutheran Charities of Western New York have teamed up for a "Helicopter Ball Drop" during the Lutheran Charities Golf Classic.
The concept is simple; people can purchase golf balls that will later be flown up and dumped all over a green. The first ball to go in the hole, or whichever one is closest, wins a dinner and an overnight stay at Russell's Steakhouse.
The ball drop enables people to help the cause without going to the golf tournament.
"Any of the balls we sell this week, half of the proceeds will go to Lutheran charities and half will go to Mercy Flight. So, you'll be able to support some wonderful ongoing agencies and you'll be able to support the great work that Mercy Flight does quietly everyday in the midst of a lot of tragedies and trauma," said Steve Biegner, the executive director of Lutheran Charities of Western New York.
Golf balls can be purchased on the Lutheran Charities website for $10 each. Those attending the tournament, however, have the option to purchase three balls for $25.
