Buffalo, N.Y. - A Buffalo police officer under federal investigation for accepting bribes has taken his own life.

Officer Jeffrey Mott committed suicide Monday at his home in Pendleton.

Niagara County SWAT team members went to Mott's home after authorities received a phone call from his fiancee who was concerned about his state of mind.

When SWAT team members went inside the home they found Mott dead, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

One source close to the investigation tells 2 On Your Side's Scott Brown that Mott was about to be indicted for taking bribes from tow truck drivers in order to steer business their way at accident scenes.

A number of other sources tell us that Mott was having domestic problems, so it's unclear what specifically led him to take his life.

Meanwhile, it appears that Jim Mazzariello remains at the center of the ongoing federal investigation.

Mazzariello owns a towing and collision shop business that was raided by the FBI and other agencies last December.

Also taking part in the raid were the IRS, the Buffalo Police Department's Internal Affairs Bureau and representatives of the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

Sources tell us Mazzariello and his business are the subject of a federal grand jury investigation, looking into whether "Jim Mazz Auto" tow truck drivers gave bribes to police officers at accident scenes in order to get tows, and the potentially lucrative auto body work that often goes along with them.

Mazzariello's attorney said the U.S. Attorney's office has come to him a number of times offering a plea deal.

Steve Cohen: "My client maintains his absolute innocence, and my client has said 'look if we've done something wrong, tell us what it is and hold us responsible for it we're fine with that but we're not going to plead guilty to something we didn't do.'"

We're told that a number of Buffalo police officers are also targets of the investigation.

Mott was one of those officers and we're told that members of the Internal Affairs Bureau were on the scene Monday when Mott's body was found.

The U.S. Attorney's office declined to comment on the case.
