LACKAWANNA, N.Y. - A doctor raised in Lackawanna is now part of a team of leading surgeons who performed an incredible facial transplant surgery.
Dr. Branko Bojovic graduated from Lackawanna High School, Canisius College, and UB Medical School before continuing his surgical training at Loyola University and Harvard.
He's now a part of the University of Maryland Medical Center where the 36-hour long surgery took place in March 2012.
Dr. Bojovic was one of five surgeons who gave a gun shot victim from Virginia a new lease on life. The intensive surgery involved taking a face from a donor and re-attaching it to the recipient.
Facial transplants are still considered experimental and are only performed after a patient has exhausted all other state-of-the-art procedures.
Prior to this particular transplant, only 22 others surgeries of that kind had been performed worldwide.
NBC featured the story of the donor and the facial transplant recipient Friday night.
