BRANT, NY - A young man from the Town of Tonawanda died Friday evening after being ejected from the vehicle he was riding in. The deadly rollover accident happened on Route 5 near Evangola State Park at about 6:20 p.m.
A statement from the Erie County Sheriff's Office says that the driver, Robert J. Mooney, 20, from the Village of Kenmore, lost control of the 2003 Jeep Liberty he was driving, causing the SUV to flip and roll several times before coming to rest in the middle of the road. His passenger, Joseph F. Cavalleri, also 20, of the Town of Tonawanda, was thrown from the Jeep and died at the scene.
Mooney was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition, according to the statement.
Sheriff's deputies say that Mooney was arrested by Town of Brant police officers and charged with driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter.
