BUFFALO, NY - Five people were sent to area hospitals Saturday afternoon after a traffic confrontation went horribly wrong.
Two vehicles sideswiped each other as one attempted to pass the other, right at the railroad bridge that crosses Clinton Street at Lord Street on the city's East Side just before 3 p.m. One of the vehicles went airborne and crashed into the bridge abutment, erupting into flames.
A nearby resident who heard the crash rescued the passenger from the burning vehicle. A witness told us the driver was able to get out by himself. Buffalo firefighters were on the scene to extinguish the fire.
Both occupants of that vehicle were taken to Erie County Medical Center with serious injuries, according to a statement released by the Buffalo Police Department Saturday night. At least three people were in the other vehicle and they were taken to Buffalo General Hospital for treatment and released.
The accident happened when one of the vehicles attempted to pass the other, police said, while both were traveling west on Clinton Street.
The Buffalo Police accident investigation unit is still looking into the circumstances of the accident. To the best of our knowledge, no charges have yet been filed yet.
