WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Obama said in a news conference Wednesday afternoon that the acting commissioner of the IRS has resigned.

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew asked for the resignation because of the ongoing controversy about the IRS giving extra scrutiny to conservative groups that were applying for tax-exempt status.

President Obama said that he was angry about the IRS actions and that he would work with congress to enact new safeguards on the IRS to make sure it doesn't happen again.
