BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The alumnae of Holy Angels Academy came together Monday to thank the women who made their education possible.
In response to the decision to close Holy Angels, the women held a fundraiser at Fat Bob's Smokehouse to benefit the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, who founded the school over 150 years ago.
Over the past few years, the nuns have given up over $1 million dollars of their retirement money to help keep the school going.
Emily Marciniak, a 2007 graduate of Holy Angels, said when she heard the news, she knew she needed to do something to help out.
"A lot of people found out over Facebook and social media sites, and I noticed a lot of people were saying, 'Oh, we should get together, have a reunion and raise some money,'" she said. "So I just kind of took the bull by the horns and said, 'Alright, we're going to do this.'"
Around 240 people showed up to the event, raising a total donation of $6,200.
