BUFFALO, NY - Fire crews worked through the morning to contain a 2-alarm fire in the city.

It broke out right around 3:00am Thursday along the 700 block of East Eagle Street.

Buffalo Firefighters found heavy smoke & flames coming from one home, but they were so intense that they spread to an adjacent home.

That prompted fire crews to upgrade the fire to 2-alarms bringing additional help to the scene.

Two dogs were treated by Rural Metro Medical Services for burns and smoke inhalation. One of them, a black lab, is on the run in the vicinity of Ellicott Creek Park in Amherst after getting away while being transported for treatment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.  Damages are estimated at $155,000.

A resident says workers installed a new heater unit on Wednesday and they believe that may have sparked the fire.

The Red Cross tells us they're assisting four adults and four children.
