BUFFALO, NY-- An Arcade woman is facing up to 25 years in state prison after pleading guilty to stealing more than a million dollars from her former employer.
The Erie County District Attorney's office says Debra Davis of Java Lake Road admitted she took $1.3 million while working as a bookkeeper for the American Stainless Corporation.
The District Attorney says that companies should hire an outside auditor every year to prevent this from happening elsewhere.
"As we so often see in these cases, it's the bookkeeper. The one that is responsible for the financial well being of the company to keep the books, so to speak, is the one who is stealing the company blind," says Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita.
Davis says she used the money to gamble, buy luxury items and even her own tow truck business that she named "Triple Star Towing" after her favorite slot machine game.
