FREWSBURG, NY - As a southern tier couple is laid to rest Friday, four men will face a judge in connection with their deaths.
The four suspects Davide Coggins, Ricky Knickerbocker, Steven Todd and Joshua McCormick will all be in Chautauqua County Court to answer to second degree murder charges in the deaths of Gordon and Joyce Skinner. The couple was found dead in their Town of Carroll home last week.
A memorial service for the Skinners is set for 11:00 Friday morning at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Frewsburg.
To Gordon's lifelong friends David Hamilton and Terry Smith who also served with him as Marines in Vietnam this loss was very personal. Smith says "No friend was more loyal, more trustrworthy, more giving than Gordie."
And Dave is quick to point out that Gordie and Joyce were inseparable with a very deep connection even beyond being a married couple. "Their involvement with each other was always for each other. and everybody else. Never for themselves. They always thought of each other before they thought of themselves."
That feeling may be reflected in the turnout for vigils and the community service. Pastor Cameron Lienhart says "We expect to be full. We're doing our best to set up accommodations for overflow."
Terry Smith describes the loss to the community as well. "Gordie and Joyce were people who gave. They were other centered. They didn't think about themselves. The thought about what they could do to help other people. They thought about what they could do meet our needs not their own needs. They didn't accumulate worldly goods, earthly things. But they accumulated strong relationships and friendships that endured all these years and will continue. They're in our hearts."
