ALFRED, N.Y. - Alfred State student Kayla Franchina asked for prom dress donations, and Western New Yorkers answered in a big way.
She organized a prom dress party similar to one she started when she was in high school, but unlike a couple of years ago, donations were slow to come in.
Franchina didn't want girls to walk away from the party empty handed and not be able to go to prom because it was too expensive.
After the story aired on Daybreak two weeks ago, dozens of viewers contacted us wanting to help. She collected 750 dresses in a little over a week. Prior to that, she only had 30.
"I can't thank them enough. It was so successful, but it wouldn't have been successful without the donations," said Franchina.
Julie's Shoes in West Seneca donated 70 brand new pairs of dress shoes for the event.
The Project Prom Dress party was held last Saturday at Alfred State. All of the girls who showed up found a dress. Franchina is donating some of the extra dresses to the project at her old high school.
The remainder will be saved for next year's project. She is also working on a detailed manual for others who may be interested in starting a similar project in their community.
