KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Two American service members are dead after the crash of a NATO helicopter in a field in eastern Afghanistan Tuesday.

Officials say the cause of the crash is under investigation, but that initial indications are that there was no enemy activity in the area at the time. The international force didn't identify the nationality of those killed, but a senior U.S. official confirmed they were Americans.

The deaths raise to nine the number of Americans killed in Afghanistan so far this month -- including three civilians.

A teacher who lives in a village near the site said he heard a loud explosion, then saw the helicopter in flames as it plunged to the ground.

With three weeks left, April has already proved to be the deadliest month this year for Afghans and foreigners serving in the country. That toll increased again today as a roadside bomb killed three Afghan civilians in southern Afghanistan.
