BUFFALO, NY - Mike and Kelly Fletcher are all about finding adventure.

They've climbed tall mountains and dove on the Great Barrier Reef.

But in November 2009, they were faced with a different kind of extreme.

Mike, 29 at the time, was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer.  The newly engaged couple found themselves planning a wedding and fighting the biggest battle of their lives.

"It was kind of taking it one day at a time, and Mike's philosophy was I am going to beat this. We're not going to let this affect what he have planned for our lives," said Kelly.

They felt making changes to their plans was like letting the cancer win.

Mike underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy and had two surgeries.  The second was only nine weeks before their wedding in October 2010.

Mike has been in remission since.

The couple wants to share their story to raise awareness about the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

Colon cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer, if it's detected early.

Mike has a family history of the disease but didn't know about it until he was diagnosed.

Kelly volunteers with the American Cancer Society, and both participate in races to raise money and awareness.

They are participating in the Buffalo Undy 5000 on Saturday, April 27 in Delaware Park.  Channel 2 is a proud sponsor of the run/walk which benefits the Colon Cancer Alliance.
