EAST AMHERST, N.Y.-Former UB head coach Reggie Witherspoon said Monday he was stunned when UB athletic director Danny White  told him he wouldn't be returning as the Bulls head coach for next season.

Surrounded by current and former players, coaches, family and friends at his East Amherst home Witherspoon said "I was shocked. I'm still shocked. Completely shocked by it." He said its the first and only conversation he had with White that wasn't positive. Witherspoon said White called him on the bus ride back from Cleveland after the Bulls were eliminated from the MAC tournament. White asked him to stop by his office when he got back. " Danny and I have never had even a disagreement. So it would be difficult for me to sit here and say bad things about Danny because we've only had really good conversations until Friday."

In his 14 years as the Bulls head coach Witherspoon took a program that was a laughing stock and made it into a credible competitive program. "Now if you start taking shortcuts you don't have a program you just have some teams. Teams might be great. You could win a championship, it's a team. And the next year you start all over and the next thing you know you don't have anything that lasts. And I don't know if that works at UB."

Witherspoon was able to attract players from all over the country to come to UB. "I always thought the biggest benefit we had to bringing people to Western New York were the people. I always thought that. I thought that the best way to connect people is to have a program, have guys who may not have been teammates but they felt permanently connected. And I still think that."

Whoever takes over as the Bulls bench boss takes over a team expected to contend for a MAC title. Channel 2 sports has learned that UB has reached a number of well known coaches. Among those UB has contacted ar Seth Greenberg, Bruce Pearl, Fran Fraschilla and Bobby Hurley. Fraschilla said he wasn't interested.

Witherspoon said he hasn't thought much about the future except that he keeps thinking about getting the team ready for next season.
