ALBANY Police on Thursday morning shot and killed a suspect who Wednesday went on a shooting rampage in Herkimer County, killing four people and critically injuring two others.

New York Police Commissioner Joseph D'Amico said police stormed an abandoned bar around 8 a.m., where 64-year-old Kurt Myers fired at a tactical team before he was shot and killed by police.

D'Amico, who said little is known about Myers other than he was "apparently a loner," said police had no contact with Myers since they exchanged fire with him at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

There was no apparent motive for the shootings. Police said Myers lit his Mohawk apartment on fire around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday before opening fire in a nearby barbershop and then a car wash in neighboring Herkimer. He then holed up in an abandoned bar for more than 15 hours.

"We still have no information on what his motive is and why he finally decided to come to this location," D'Amico said.

No law enforcement officials were injured in the lengthy standoff, though an FBI police dog was shot and killed by Myers.

"We commend the courage and extraordinary efforts of the state police, the FBI, and local law enforcement officials in finding the suspect and ending this horrific spree of violence and bloodshed," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. "It is now time for mourning those who we lost in this senseless act of violence."

State Police said they were in no rush to engage Myers in downtown Herikmer after he entered the empty building after the shootings.

D'Amico said two shooting victims from the barbershop remained in critical condition Thursday morning.

"It's been a pretty long 25 hours here that we've been on scene here with this tragedy," Herkimer County District Attorney John Crandall said.

"The action by police this morning was very much nothing short of heroic."
