British scientists say they've found a way to restore sight in totally blind mice ... using a treatment that may one day work in humans.

a team from oxford university injected light-sensing cells into the eyes of blind mice that were unable to tell the difference between light and dark.

two weeks after the injections, the cells formed new, reconstructed retinas ... restoring the sight of the mice.

however, researchers say it's unclear what quality of vision the injections provide.

more studies are underway using human embryonic stem cells .. but it will be several years before there are reliable results.
