VATICAN CITY - Black smoke billowed from the Vatican's chimney around 6:40 a.m. eastern time, a sign that the morning's ballots didn't select a replacement for the head of the Catholic church.

There was some confusion as the smoke appeared white at first, but it soon darkened.

The cardinals then broke for lunch- they're returning to conclave around 11:00 a.m. eastern and will vote again, and another time if needed.

2 On Your Side's Maryalice Demler described the crowd as excited despite the black smoke.
