WEBSTER, N.Y. - The two Webster firefighters who survived the Christmas Eve shooting that killed two of their brothers spoke publicly Wednesday about the incident, for the first time.

Joseph Hofstetter and Ted Scardino were shot on December 24 after arriving at the scene of a house fire in Webster, just east of Rochester.

Two other firefighters, Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka, were killed when William Spengler opened fire on them as they arrived on the scene.

Police say Spengler set fire to the lakeside house he shared with his sister.

Hofstetter and Scardino said Wednesday that they never expected something like that to happen in their hometown.  Both men also thanked the public for their support.

They are doing physical therapy and hope to return to firefighting soon.
