BATAVIA, N.Y. - The City of Batavia is looking to get out of the trash business.
At a meeting Wednesday night, the city voted to extend the garbage and recycling service from current provider, ARC, until May 31.
Beginning June 1, the city wants homeowners to decide for themselves. Under the proposal, residents can either haul their own garbage to the transfer station in the Town of Batavia, or they can choose to pay a private company. The city says it will provide homeowners with a list of options, with one of those options being ARC.
The proposal Wednesday night was a response to the city's original plan getting rejected 7-2. The original plan transferred garbage and recycling service from ARC to an out of town provider.
The new plan will be voted on at a public hearing on March 11th.
