AMHERST, N.Y. -- Plans to build a hotel in Amherst are going forward, despite complaints from area residents.

Last night, the Amherst Zoning Board of Appeals approved nine variances that will allow Iskalo Development to build a six-story Hyatt Hotel. The hotel will be built behind the Lord Amherst Hotel, just across from a residential area.  Neighbors say the hotel would run their view.

If the site plan is approved by the town planning board in March, construction will begin this spring.

The decision came one day after the Amherst Town Board struck down a proposal for a temporary moratorium that would bar the construction of buildings taller than 50 feet.

Last summer, residents there took the town and zoning board to court in an attempt to block construction. Citing quality of life issues, some said they thought a deed restriction from the late 1960s protected the space. The zoning board ruled last year that the restriction was outdated.
