SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - The Coast Guard has called off the search for a boat that reportedly sank far off the Central California coast with two adults and two children on board, saying it could be a hoax.
Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Mike Lutz said Tuesday morning crews found no debris and no physical signs of distress after searching for nearly 48 hours.
The Coast Guard received a series of broken distress calls Sunday saying a family of four was in a sailboat that was taking on water. The family said they were trying to fashion a makeshift life raft.
Lutz says no one has come forward to report family members missing at sea.
