An Oneida County man accused of beating his girlfriend to death inside her SUNY Brockport dorm room in September appeared in court Wednesday morning.
Clayton Whittemore, 21, of New Hartford, is charged with second-degree murder in the killing of 18-year-old Alexandra Kogut, a freshman at the College at Brockport who also was from New Hartford. He appeared before state Supreme Court Justice Daniel K. Doyle.
His attorneys have said they intend to pursue a defense that Whittemore was suffering from "extreme emotional disturbance" at the time of the killing. He will be examined by defense and prosecution experts.
Additional hearings are scheduled for May 10, with the trial set to begin Sept. 30.
Whittemore allegedly admitted to sheriff's deputies that he killed Kogut during an argument.
