Video: Grisanti Explains Vote In Favor Of Gun Control Laws

State Senator Mark Grisanti (R-60th District)

Buffalo, N.Y. - "I know that it's a burden for the gun owners and what they have to go through," said Buffalo State Senator Mark Grisanti in talking about his vote earlier this week in favor of the state's new gun control laws.

Grisanti knows his yes vote is not going to make a lot of gun owners in his district happy.

Senator Mark Grisanti: "There are numerous crimes, the vast majority are against law abiding citizens, so how do you prevent people who are not law abiding citizens from that happening? You have to look at measures that unfortunately are going to effect law abiding citizens in order to stop those type of crimes."

Grisanti says the bill includes a number of safety provisions that he believes outweigh any impact on gun owners, and turned him originally from a no vote to a yes.

Among them:

* Increase sentences for gun crimes including taking a gun on school property and for guns used in gang activity.

* Require therapists who believe a mental health patient of theirs is threatening to use a gun illegally to report that threat to the state.

* Requiring a sentence of life in prison without parole for anyone who kills a first responder.

Scott Brown: "There are five Republican senators from Western New York, you were the only one to vote in favor of the new laws, what does that say about you?"

Mark Grisanti: "I can't speak for the others, but for me personally it says I do my homework when I look at a piece of legislation. I just don't vote no for fear of reprisal or some sort of political retribution."

Scott Brown: "Bottom line do you think these changes are going to save lives?"

Senator Mark Grisanti: "I know that it's a burden for the gun owners and what they have to go through. I think the public policy initiatives that we put into the law are are important measures that either will save or prevent something from happening in the future."
