WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y.-Sweet Home beat Williamsville South 54-43 Tuesday night at South.
The Billies got off to a good start but the Panthers didn't get flustered and by halftime had built a five point lead, 23-18.
For Sweet Home # 11 Khalid Barnes was the high scorer with 18 points. Another senior # 10 Mike Torrillo was the only other Panthers player in double figures with 13.
Both teams were unbeaten with 5-0 records in league play going into the game. Sweet Home head coach Scott Martin told Two on Your Side's Stu Boyar "early on we knew it would be an emotionally charged game. They played an extended 2-3 zone, it rattled us at first and then we settled in. Barnes got hot in the first quarter and that got us going. The key to the entire game was our defensive game. Jordan Heine didn't score in the game but completely changed the game with his defensive energy. We were in their gym and we held them to 43 points. I would say that's a pretty good defensive effort."
With the win Sweet Home improves to 6-0 in league play and 9-1 overall. South drops to 5-1 in league play.
Two players scored in double figures for South, # 23 Damian Powers and # 10 Sam Castronova each with 12 points for the Billies.
Sweet Home is home against Hamburg Thursday and the play Middle College from Buffalo Saturday in the MLK Classic at Hutch-Tech. Tipoff for Saturday's game is scheduled for 4-pm.
