BUFFALO, NY - It was touch and go for a while but, following a series of surgeries, officials at the Buffalo Small Animal Hospital say it looks like a puppy set on fire will not lose his badly injured leg.
Phoenix, the Jack Russell terrier pup, had, what they hope, was his last skin graft surgery on Friday. Staff at the hospital say he continues to make a remarkable recovery and is putting more of his weight on the leg every day.
Two teens were charged with setting fire to the animal last fall. One of them, 17-year-old Diondre Brown, has admitted he acted as a lookout for the other teen, Adell Ziegler. Ziegler has pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty charges.
Hundreds have applied to adopt Phoenix, but officials at the hospital say a decision on who will be the lucky one is still a ways off. The dog remains in foster care for now.
