BUFFALO,NY--Despite everything he's been through, the little puppy who has captured the hearts of everyone who hears his story, continues on his remarkable road to recovery.

Phoenix, the Jack Russell terrier set on fire back in October, has a long road ahead of him, but his caregivers at the Buffalo Small Animal Hospital are very pleased with his progress.

Senior veterinarian Rebecca Wagner says the puppy is doing "very well" following a second surgery last week to graft skin onto his bad leg.

Even though he's not out of the woods yet, Wagner says the news is just one more positive step in efforts to prevent the leg from being amputated. Another surgery is set for Thursday to graft more skin onto his lower belly. He remains on pain medication and antibiotics to treat an infection in his ankle.

The staff at the hospital says Phoenix looks wonderful and continues to get more "playful and puppy-ish" everyday. They say there are literally hundreds of applications to adopt him, but that day is still a long way off.

Two teenagers, Diondre Brown, 17, and Adell Zeigler, 19, both of Buffalo, are charged with one count each of felony aggravated cruelty to animals. Police say they admitted hanging the dog three feet off the ground, dousing him with lighter fluid and setting him on fire.
