ALBANY -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo is calling on the state Thruway Authority to pump the brakes on a proposed 45 toll increase on trucks, saying all other option should be explored before increasing costs on drivers.

"A toll is really the last resort after everything else is explored," Cuomo said Tuesday on 1300-AM (WGDJ) in Albany.

The Thruway Authority has been wrangling over whether to go forward with the toll increase on trucks first proposed in May. The Thruway board has canceled three meetings since September to approve the toll increase. Business groups have heavily criticized the proposal.

Cuomo said he has directed the Thruway board to "explore every possible option," adding that "I don't believe it's impossible" to avoid a toll hike. The toll increase would bring in about $85 million a year for the financially strapped authority, which oversees the 570-mile thoroughfare.

The Thruway Authority hasn't indicated when it would next meet.
