The opposition continues to mount against the state's choice of a Canadian company to produce new drivers licenses.  There is now a petition making the rounds.

That petition is now available at Chautauqua County DMV offices.

Many taxpayers and state lawmakers question why the state went with the highest bidder of $88.5 million for new licenses that will be in black and white.  The Associated Press reports the winning bid is $38 million higher than the bid from the current provider.

Chautauqua County Clerk, Sandra Sopak, says she wanted to give people here a chance to let lawmakers know how they feel about it.

State DMV Commissioner Barbara Fiala, who ironically met with county clerks yesterday in Saratoga Springs, did not answer reporters questions about the deal.  Her office later released a statement saying the losing bidders use inferior technology and that the state must meet homeland security requirements.

The State Comptroller's office is currently reviewing the contract and must still give it's okay for the deal to be approved.  State lawmakers could also try to stop it with a resolution.
