BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A new report claims the Buffalo area experiences the slowest data speeds in the entire country among the 4 largest cell carriers.

The study, which uses data from RootMetrics tests performed back in May, shows Sprint has the slowest download and upload speeds.

John O'Malley, a spokesperson for Verizon, says the Sprint speeds drag down the entire Buffalo average. He said local Verizon customers experience speeds on par with the rest of the country.

"The implication that the Buffalo market is slower than any other market or behind the times, I don't think is accurate," O'Malley said.

Verizon gets the highest marks from RootMetrics, with AT&T following closely behind.

Both companies have been expanding their 4G networks in Western New York. 4G LTE networks are much faster than traditional networks and 3G service. Verizon has doubled its 4G sites over the past 6 months, and AT&T has also expanded service.

Sprint does not offer 4G service in our area, which helps explain its slow download speeds.

Sprint Spokesperson Walter Fowler sent 2 On Your Side the following response:

We are continuously upgrading our network so that it can better meet the needs of Sprint customers. With regard to Buffalo, New York , there have been 121 network enhancements made in the past six months alone, 53 of which provide users with clearer voice calls, and 68 that provide users with enhanced data speed and improve the network's ability to handle additional data capacity.

AT&T released the following statement regarding the report:

AT&T launched 4G LTE service in Buffalo in July, following the wireless network performance test conducted by RootMetrics in the Buffalo market. Our wireless customers in Buffalo are now benefiting from blazing fast 4G LTE service, capable of delivering mobile Internet speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G. In fact during a recent third-party speed test performed by PCWorld in 13 cities, AT&T's 4G network delivered faster download speeds than any other carrier tested.
