BUFFALO, NY - A U.S. Customs and Border Protection employee was charged Wednesday with possession of child pornography.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said an investigation into a suspect involved in child pornography in Phoenix led them here to Steven Metz, 40, of Hamburg, a supervisory officer who works out of the Port of Buffalo.

According to the complaint, Metz and the Arizona suspect allegedly exchanged a series of emails containing both images and videos of children involved in sex acts.

A search warrant was executed for email accounts belonging to Metz back in August. Agents found various emails indicating the CBP officer both sent and received child porn.

Metz denied viewing the pornography and claimed he had nothing to do with the alleged email account. However, two computers taken from his house in October uncovered child porn on both of them.

The 16-year CBP worker appeared before U.S. Magistrate Jeremiah McCarthy Wednesday afternoon. Metz is being held without bail until a detention hearing set for Thursday afternoon. He's been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of this case.

The agency released the following statement in regards to the arrest:

"CBP stresses honor and integrity in every aspect of our mission, and the overwhelming majority of CBP employees and officers perform their duties with honor and distinction, working tirelessly every day to keep our country safe.

"We do not tolerate corruption, abuse or criminal activity within our ranks, and we fully cooperate with any criminal or administrative investigations of alleged misconduct by any of our personnel, on or off duty.

"In fact, we have put in place extensive measures to proactively prevent misconduct by employing a rigorous vetting process and conducting thorough background investigations on those we hire."
