A new study suggests living in a stressed environment as a baby may change the way a person's brain functions.

University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers have been following a group of families since the early 90's.

Young girls who lived in homes with stressed mothers tended to have high levels of a stress hormone as preschoolers. they were also more likely to have higher levels of anxiety at age 18.

Brain scans of the girls showed alterations in the area of the brain responsible for emotional regulation.
