GRAND ISLAND, NY -- The outpouring of support has been amazing. On Monday, November 5th, a fire ripped through the Ray family's apartment on Grand Island.

The family lost everything, including their three pets. Linda Smith says she is just happy that her boys, eighteen-year old, Christopher Ray and sixteen-year old Daniel Ray are fine.

Chris was home alone at the time. He was taken to ECMC with smoke inhalation and minor burns.

This family knows all too well about loss. One year earlier, to the day, Linda's husband, the boys' stepfather, passed away.

Now, without renter's insurance, Linda Smith and her boys, Chris and Daniel Ray are left with nothing. But the community is helping.

The Grand Island School District has raised around $1,000 from dress down and hat day. The junior class has raised $350. The community has also stepped up. Park Avenue Coat company has given Linda and her boys free winter coats. Hizzair Hair Salon has offered free haircuts and a make-over for Linda. They are also have a cut-a-thon on December 1st at their Grand Island Salon. All of the proceeds for every haircut will go to the Ray Family Fund.

The Supervisor of Grand Island, Mary Cooke, is also helping. She has offered to open the Town Hall as a drop off point for much needed items for the family. Cooke hopes the community will come to the aid of this family.

The Grand Island Neighbor Foundation has also donated $1,000 to the family to help them rebuild their lives. Some other businesses have helped including: Dick and Jenny's Restaurant, Ficel Transport, Budwey's, Hizzair as well as countless individuals.

The Grand Island High School and Town Hall are open for drop-offs during regular business hours.

So far nearly $6,000 in cash and gift cards has been donated to help the family.
