CHEEKTOWAGA, NY-- Funeral services will be held this morning for a WNY soldier killed in Afghanistan.

The body of Army Specialist Brett Gornewicz of Alden returned to WNY on Sunday morning.

The combat engineer was killed by an IED blast last weekend in Afghanistan while handling the dangerous duty of clearing roadside bombs.

A military honor guard unloaded his casket from the plane in the formal ceremony at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Then state and local police and sheriff's deputies lead the way in a procession to Alden.  Some people lined the route to pay respects to the fallen soldier and the Gornewicz family.

The Patriot Guard motorcycle group also provided an escort. It touched the heart of a veteran who came out to watch the procession and pay his respects. As he put it "The older I get, the more I understand how great this country really is and what they're preserving for us. And I would just say it was wonderful to see the whole procession, all the bikers that came through to protect him."

The funeral for Specialist Gornewicz is set for 11 AM Monday at the St. John's Church on Sandridge Road in Alden. We of course will have coverage on Channel 2 News and at

You can send condolences to Spc. Gornewicz's family by clicking here.  We will make sure to send them to his family.
