BUFFALO, NY - The Department of Defense is reporting the death of another Western New York soldier.

Military officials say Army Specialist Brett E. Gornewicz, 27, of Alden was one of three soldiers killed November 3 when their unit was hit with an IED (improvised explosive device) in the Paktia province of Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Dain T. Venne, 29, of Port Henry, N.Y. and Spc. Ryan P. Jayne, 22, of Campbell, N.Y. were also killed.

The three soldiers were members of the 479th Engineering Battalion, out of Watertown, N.Y.

Gornewicz graduated from Alden High School in 2003 and from Buffalo State College in 2011 with a bachelor of science degree in industrial technology.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is directing all flags on state buildings to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday, November 7th, in honor of the soldiers.

"Along with all New Yorkers, I mourn the deaths of Specialist Gornewicz, Specialist Jayne and Staff Sgt. Venne," Governor Cuomo said. "These young men were all volunteers who lived and worked in our communities and gave their lives for our great country. We extend our condolences to their friends, their families, and their fellow Soldiers."
